As discussed yesterday, Build Your Arabic Vocabulary is an excellent way to learn a lot of words quickly, but is not very clear in the type of Arabic it is written in. With a bit of help from Mohammad Saleh Kayali from The Arabic Podclass I’ve been able to get some more information on different versions of words. Comments to complete this list are much appreciated.

“What”:

ما (maa) in Modern Standard Arabic, for nouns

ماذا (maadha) also in M.S.A., for verbs

شو (shuu) in colloquial Syrian and Palestinian

“When”:

متى (mataa) in M.S.A.

إيمت (‘iimat) in colloquial Syrian (I’m not sure about Palestinian)

“Why”:

لماذا (lamaadha) in M.S.A.

ليش (liish) in colloquial Syrian and Palestinian

“Where”:

أين (ayna) in M.S.A.

وين (wayn) in colloquial Syrian and Palestinian
